The   Tulips   of  Keukenhof   Gardens

Just outside Amsterdam and open only eight weeks a year is Holland’s seventy-acre Keukenhof garden, with seven million flowers.   During this time, 800,000 visitors flock here.   That's an average of 14,000 per day.   Keukenhof celebrated its 60th birthday in 2014 with the 400th anniversary of Captain Henry Hudson’s sailing into New York City.

Keukenhof is the largest and most beautiful spring garden in the world!   More than seven million tulips, daffodils and hyacinths fill over 70 acres with color and fragrance.

The world "tulip" comes from their original home, Turkey and is Turkish for "turban."   In 1636, (during the famous "tulip mania"), tulip bulbs sold for more than the cost of a house.   During the war, valuable tulip bulbs were eaten to avoid starvation.   They are edible and very sweet.

The Hudson River ~ New Amsterdam, (now New York), ~ the Bronx ~ Manhattan ~ Staten Island ~ Flushing and Harlem, ... are all Dutch names.
