Black Guillemot, Arctic Terns, Eider ducks, and 80,000 puffins inhabit Vigur Island, Iceland
Over half of the world´s population of the Atlantic Puffin breeds in Iceland, somewhere between 3 - 4 million pairs each year. The total population of puffins in Iceland is estimated to be between 8 and 10 million birds. The Atlantic Puffin is one of the four species of puffins and the one most commonly found in Iceland. The Icelandic word for puffin is "lundi."

Eider Ducks produce over 3,000 kg/year of Icelandic Eiderdown. It takes 80 nests to produce one kilogram of down. In 1847 the eider became a fully protected species. Eiderdown is warm, light, and cozy as it holds a significant volume of air and has small unique, hook-like threads that lock it together providing the insulation's air pockets. The down is dried immediately after it is gathered and then heated to 120° Centigrade to disinfect it.
