May 27, 2012The city of Florence dates back to 59 B.C. when the Romans, under Caesar Augustus founded the colony of “Florentia.” The name “Firenze” comes from Latin, “florentia” meaning Flora and Flower. Florence was the home of Michelangelo, Leonardo Da Vinci, Dante and Machiavelli.
The Cathedral of Saint Mary of the Flower; the Duomo and Giotto’s Bell Tower.
“The David” In 1501 the Florentine Republic commissioned Michelangelo with the figure of David when Michelangelo was only 26 years of age and took three years to complete. The statue stands 13.5 feet high.
