African Penguin

(Spheniscus Demersus)

The African penguin is unmistakable with its black-and-white pale pink skin around its eyes.   A young African penguin is dull-looking with a completely dark head.   They feed on shoaling fish and squid by day, and return to shore at dusk.  They are very gregarious at their roosts and breeding colonies with a nasal, donkey-like bray – giving them the name “Jackass Penguin.”   The best location to view these African Penguins is Boulder’s Beach in Simon’s Town, just outside of Cape Town.

A group of penguins is called: colony, rookery, huddle, or a crèche of penguins.
