Faces of Burma
Thanaka: Uniquely BurmeseAs Burma emerges from the shadows, its local skincare miracle is primed to become beauty’s hottest new ingredient.Burmese women and children are distinguished by the thanakathey wore on their cheeks. Thanaka is pale yellow past made from ground Burmese tree bark and water. Traditionally, women of all ages and children wore the paste on their faces in the form of a very precise rectangle, but as you can see, it has been modernized and now worn on the cheeks, nose and forehead in modern designs - by men as well. Although it cannot be seen, they sometimes wear thanaka on their arms and legs. Thanaka controls oiliness and acts as a sunscreen. It has a light fragrance and this tradition was unique to Burmese women and children.
